Discover Our Community Spirit
Welcome to the Miners Welfare Recreation Grounds
Experience the heart of Chilton at the Miners Welfare Recreation Grounds, where community and heritage unite for a brighter future.
Our Legacy and Mission
The Miners Welfare fund was established in 1920 to be applied to “purposes connected with social wellbeing, recreation and conditions of living, of workers in or about coal mines.” A committee to administer the fund “the Miners Welfare Committee” established in 1925 and the conveyancing of land and assets for the purpose of the charity Miners Welfare Recreation Ground (charity no. 520757) is dated 13th February 1934.
The original Miners contributed a “penny a ton” of coal filled from their wages to pay for the ground which consisted of a football pitch, cricket pitch, bowling green, tennis courts and children’s recreation ground.
The Trust continues to deliver its mission to promote wellbeing and enhance social engagement for the Chilton community through leisure, recreation and sport. The Bowling Pavilion now doubles as a social/education facility; the recreation park, bowling green/croquet lawn, tennis courts, football pitches remain with the addition of a MUGA and skatepark and the grounds are used for large scale outdoor events – Chilton Annual Show, Firework Display.
